- I encountered a problem using the telephone answering program in a
- Compaq computer. The system did not recognize the DTMF signals from
- most telephones when needed for instructions. Investigation showed the
- problem was in the modem rather than software. (We used hyperterminal
- to see the codes being received.) We tested 7 phones, all within the
- 1.5% tolerance on the frequencies of the tones generated. Only two of
- the phones were consistently recognized by the modem. They generated
- tones with very similar frequency patterns. With the other phones, some
- keys were consistently recognized, others missed most of the time. This
- varied among phones. Compaq is providing a new modem. My question, is
- this likely to be manufacturing problem in this one modem, or is it more
- likely a design problem that we will see in the new modem? I would
- appreciate an e-mail copy of any response. Thank you.
